Frequently Asked Questions

What does Rolfing® Structural Integration feel like?

Rolfing is relaxing and feels wonderful. After a session, it’s not surprising to hear people say they feel “lighter,” “more spacious,” “taller,” and “can breathe deeper” or “move more easily.”

Throughout a session, the contact can range anywhere from very light to comfortably deep. My training allows me to combine Rolfing’s unique combination of depth, speed, and pressure to contact the different layers and structures of a body with great exactness. Most people find the work to be relaxing and enjoyable. At times, you may feel intense sensations, but I am careful to ensure that we stay within your personal comfort zone. When the contact is uncomfortable, the work becomes much less effective.

How often should I come in?

For a Ten Series:

When scheduling a Ten Series or a shorter Advanced Series, coming in once a week or once every other week works well for most people, as it allows the work ample time to settle in between visits. However, if you have a demanding schedule and can only come in once every three or four weeks, that’s okay. The important thing is to do what feels right for you.

For an Injury, Complaint, or Shorter Series:

When the goal is to fix or alleviate a complaint outside the format of a series, I ask all my clients to consider three sessions, spaced a week or two apart. Three sessions gives me the chance to begin to address how the entire body is working in relation to the pain or discomfort. And, it gives the client an opportunity to realize whether or not Rolfing is for them. We can then discuss if and how much more work may be appropriate.

I realize that the experience of the first session will inform the decision to re-schedule, and I therefore never ask anyone to commit beyond the initial session.

After a Series of Sessions:

After finishing a Rolfing series, or any number of sessions, some people feel “complete,” while others find Rolfing to be an important part of their personal progression and therefore schedule additional regular sessions.

It’s been my experience that just about everyone benefits from scheduling a “tune-up” session every change of season, as it both maintains and furthers the work.

Folks managing chronic pain sometimes schedule monthly or weekly appointments, while athletes may come in before or after important events.

Basically, I let my clients decide how and when they want to see me, and do my best to answer any questions around their decision.

What can I do to get the most out of my Rolfing session(s)?

To experience Rolfing can be the start of learning, or deepening, the understanding that we are dynamic beings influenced by our relationship to the world around us. One of the best ways to strengthen the effects of your Rolfing is to take a little time and notice how the changes you felt directly after a session are presenting themselves in the way you move throughout the day.

This may be as simple as checking in with your posture every now and then when sitting at work, or paying attention to how you move when walking in the grocery store. Considering how you relate to others, and how people see or relate to you, can be another step toward understanding how the work is affecting your place in the world.

Do you do Energy Work?

Yes, I incorporate a number of energetic techniques during my sessions that make my Rolfing more effective and efficient. Specifically, I set up an energetic container around the table before the start of a session and use an off-the-body scan as part of my diagnostic inquiry.

I have been studying energy work for years and have recently begun to help teach these techniques to others. With this in mind, please know that I am happy to give energetically based sessions. Here is a partial list of the energetic techniques I might use.

    • Clear the body of disruptive foreign energies
    • Revitalize the body’s guardian energies
    • Seal any places in the body that may be leaking vital energy
    • Revitalize the chakras (energy centers)
    • Strengthen the connection to the universal blueprint of health/source
