About Rolfing® Structural Integration
Over the past 30 years, thousands of people have experienced relief from pain and stress through Rolfing®. Even with this excellent record it remains a mystery to many, and I am frequently asked, "What is Rolfing?"
Created by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Rolfing Structural Integration is a holistic system of soft tissue manipulation that releases and re-educates areas of stress (soft tissue restrictions) trapped in the body.
Typical results are a reduction in pain, improved posture, more efficient movement, and an overall increase in health. For many, experiencing this higher level of wellbeing allows them to express more of who they truly are.
The combination of tissue release, re-education, alignment, and the possibility for personal transformation are some of the things that make Rolfing so unique.
The whole body can be addressed during 10 systematic sessions known as the Ten Series, or, a specific complaint can be the focus of a few appointments. Each session lasts 75 minutes. Clients wear comfortable clothing and the work is done on a massage table. Because each person I see is unique, I always address a client's personal goals, transformative path, dreams of health or curiosity during each session. I also help clients understand and integrate the changes Rolfing provides, which allows them to comfortably perceive the world in a new way.
How does it feel?
Rolfing is relaxing and feels wonderful. I use direct pressure to "melt" connective tissue adhesions (tight or restricted areas of the body's soft tissue) and release tension trapped in the affected area. My training allows me to combine Rolfing's unique combination of depth, speed, and pressure to contact the different layers and structures of a body with great exactness. The touch can range from light to comfortably deep and the contact always stays within an individual's comfort zone.
Who can it help?
Rolfing can benefit everyone. I serve people of all ages and backgrounds in my practice.
Many people seek Rolfing to recover from chronic back pain, headaches, sports injuries, car accidents and age-related stiffness.
How does Rolfing work?
When stress or trauma manifests in the body, connective tissue may become increasingly solid and rigid or hold onto non-optimal experiences. This internal constriction can restrict joint and spine range of motion and cause pain.
Rolfing works by comfortably melting these connective tissue adhesions (tight or restricted areas of the body's soft tissue). Every individual has a unique experience, but it is very common to feel relief from pain and tension, move more easily with greater flexibility and range of motion, and have a general sense of feeling more "at home" in your body.
Background / Education
A wrist injury in my late 20's prevented me from participating in three of my favorite activities: rock climbing, skiing and cycling. And even though I was making my living as a writer, I couldn't type. Weeks after surgery, when the problem still had not resolved, I turned to Rolfing, hoping to regain my health.
My experience quickly exceeded my expectations. Thanks to the Rolfing, not only did my wrist fully recover, the work impacted my life in a deeper way and I was soon enrolled in classes at the Boulder, Colorado Rolf Institute of Structural Integration. I am now a Certified Advanced Rolfer and continue to enrich my practice by attending classes and workshops. In addition, I have returned to the Rolf Institute as an Assistant Instructor.
I am more than happy to visit with you at my office to answer any of your questions and demonstrate what Rolfing feels like, free of charge, during a thirty-minute consultation.
